SOUTH KOREA - Fingerprinting In Effect From 1 July 2011

From today, 1 July 2011, foreign nationals applying for the first time for Alien Registration Cards in South Korea will be required to submit fingerprint data upon application. This is in accordance with Immigration Law Article 38 and Supplementary Provisions Article 2.

Who Needs To Submit Fingerprints?

From 1 July 2011, all new applicants for Alien Registration Cards who are aged 17 or older will be required to submit fingerprint data. Foreign nationals already in possession of an Alien Registration Card issued prior to 1 July 2011 will be required to submit fingerprint data on renewal application, effective from 1 January 2012.

Reminder

Foreign nationals remaining in South Korea for longer than 90 days are required to obtain Alien Registration Cards and to carry them as ID at all times. In addition, Alien Registration Cards are a requirement for many aspects of day to day life, for example, for opening a bank account.

It is a legal requirement in South Korea (Immigration Control Law and Relevant Rules, Enforcement Decree Article 1, Section 1, Clause 4) that any changes of status (e.g. change in residential address, change in name) must be reported to the authorities immediately, and a new Alien Registration Card issued.

Action Items

  • Advise any employee moving to South Korea that they will be required to submit fingerprint data upon application for their Alien Registration Card
