MEXICO – Authorities Contacting Employers to Check Application Information

The National Immigration Institute (INM) in Mexico has recently begun contacting by phone, without warning, the legal representatives of companies in Mexico that have sponsored work visa and resident permit applications for foreign national employees.

The purpose of such calls is to validate that the applications are actually sponsored by the company.

These calls may result in possible delays when the INM cannot contact the legal representative immediately.

More Details

The INM officials in charge of this process will validate the following information:

  • Activities to be performed by the foreign national employee;
  • The position and job title of the foreign national employee;
  • The nationality of the foreign national employee;
  • Intended length of the assignment.

The measure may be only temporary, as it was not officially announced. It began at the INM offices in Mexico City and the State of Mexico, and is expected to extend to the rest of the country.

Action Items

  • Ensure that a legal representative of the company is available to take a surprise verification call from the INM, to avoid work visa and resident permit processing delays.
